" ... A safe place for children ..."

*

One of the numerous young trees that are growing and thriving toward the middle of the cattail marsh I look out on from my porch.

  1. You reminded me of Gary Snyder's poem For The Children.

    The rising hills, the slopes,
    of statistics
    lie before us,
    the steep climb
    of everything, going up,
    up, as we all
    go down.

    In the next century
    or the one beyond that,
    they say,
    are valleys, pastures,
we can meet there in peace
    if we make it.

    To climb these coming crests
    one word to you, to
    you and your children:

    stay together
    learn the flowers
    go light.

  2. Robin -- Thank you for writing out that poem. I remember being 24 years old when I first read it, heartened by his vision of a peaceful meeting in the future and a way to survive in the meantime. The words "stay together, learn the flowers, go light" have come to me again and again since then.
