Oboe sleeping on my yoga blankets and just below Richard's watercolor painting of a sailboat

Our lives are like islands in the sea, or like trees in the forest. The maple and the pine may whisper to each other with their leaves ... But the trees also commingle their roots in the darkness underground, and the islands also hang together through the ocean's bottom.

-- William James, psychologist and philosopher (1842-1910)

This is the most difficult time of year for me, just before the summer solstice.  The easiest things become difficult.  I try to focus on the part of me that is well no matter what.  Every year after the solstice, as the days begin to become shorter, my spirits begin to lift.  I am clearly out of sync with most people, but I know that I am not alone either.

Oboe appears to be in good spirits every day, year in and year out. She is good company.

I also found the long days of summer almost unbearable when we were living in Port Townsend. I grew up in different latitudes and was more accustomed to the sun going down by 8:30 or 9:00. Light at 10:00 pm seemed so utterly manic to me.

i think we can learn a bit looking at the circle that is oboe, those o's in the name, the comfort with self. here's to the days ahead, crossing the solstice. when it's light i miss the dark, when it's dark, i miss the light. kjm

Lovely picture and great quote.

I like the long daylight hours, though for taking pictures they're a mixed blessing as it means getting up obscenely early in the morning and waiting an inordinately long time in he afternoon to catch the "golden hours".

Anyway, chin up!
