IN BEAUTY WE WALK / That the 11-year-olds who saw this film in 2007 are now 24 years old and are voting in unprecedented numbers is heartening / THE HEARTACHE AND THE BEAUTY

Hmmmm ... In the midst of current events, I became aware of an odd resemblance to characters in a film I watched some time ago.

This morning I followed up on my intuition that the character (played by Nicole Kidman), who is accompanied by a disturbing orange creature who reminds me of a certain presidential candidate," looks very much like a certain woman who has been nominated for a position as a Supreme Court justice.

"... The film depicts the adventures of Lyra Belacqua, an orphan living in a parallel universe where a dogmatic ruling power called the Magisterium opposes free inquiry ..."

Clouds and light in the October sky in the coastal Pacific Northwest in the early morning:

Walking in Beauty: Closing Prayer from the Navajo Way Blessing Ceremony

In beauty I walk
With beauty before me I walk
With beauty behind me I walk
With beauty above me I walk
With beauty around me I walk
It has become beauty again
Hózhóogo naasháa doo
Shitsijí’ hózhóogo naasháa doo
Shikéédéé hózhóogo naasháa doo
Shideigi hózhóogo naasháa doo
T’áá altso shinaagóó hózhóogo naasháa doo
Hózhó náhásdlíí’
Hózhó náhásdlíí’
Hózhó náhásdlíí’
Hózhó náhásdlíí’
Today I will walk out, today everything negative will leave me
I will be as I was before, I will have a cool breeze over my body.
I will have a light body, I will be happy forever, nothing will hinder me.
I walk with beauty before me. I walk with beauty behind me.
I walk with beauty below me. I walk with beauty above me.
I walk with beauty around me. My words will be beautiful.
In beauty all day long may I walk.
Through the returning seasons, may I walk.
On the trail marked with pollen may I walk.
With dew about my feet, may I walk.
With beauty before me may I walk.
With beauty behind me may I walk.
With beauty below me may I walk.
With beauty above me may I walk.
With beauty all around me may I walk.
In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, lively, may I walk.
In old age wandering on a trail of beauty, living again, may I walk.
My words will be beautiful…

I can’t believe this anti feminist judge will be confirmed today in this utterly illegitimate process and she will sit on the court slicing away our rights for decades to come. It seems she will be to women what Clarence Thomas has been to Black people. Actually they both care nothing at all for the marginalized. Ironically, as the hew you’re the words of the founding fathers they miss completely the ugly irony that neither of them would have a place on the court if those words were followed to the letter. Sigh. We go on.

It's a good film, The Golden Compass. However, I enjoyed reading the books even more! Over here, the BBC serialized the whole trilogy recently. The little bits of the series I saw looked really good.

This has been my daughter's favourite book for many years. She couldn't bear watching the film it felt wrong she said. Have ¥ou read any of the author's, Philip Pullman's books? They are amazing.

Sabine -- Now I'm inspired to read the book, having never read anything by Philip Pullman. I did listen to an interview with him somewhat recently and was moved by what he said. Many thanks to you and your daughter for the recommendation.
