"... As a river that flows -- Know the Way ..."

“Nothing is softer or more flexible than water, yet nothing can resist it.” – Lao Tzu

I'm taking the following words out of context, but they are the words that come to mind when I look at this water flowing to sea level:

Honest and clear -- Feel the change
As a river that flows -- Know the Way

(lyrics by Larry Beckett and Tim Buckley, from "Goodbye and Hello" -- 1967)

There's a river that runs through Tassajara Zen Center in California. When I've had a cabin next to the river, the sound lulls me to sleep at night. It is such a force of nature, of life.

I had to laugh. water is neither soft nor flexible as any kid who has ever done a belly flop into a pool knows. water can flow but it does not compress, and it will seep out of any opening however minute.

That is so beautiful. When I was five years old, my father took me to the stream at the bottom of our garden and we put our hands and various leaves in the water while he explained about panta rei, the ancient Greek concept that everything floats.
