Many years ago, we drove around the peninsula that inspired Seamus Heaney to write this poem. This is the Ards peninsula on the east coast of County Down in Northern Ireland. It faces the sea and Strangford Lough, a big lake with a sea opening. It is sparsely inhabited.

It's a very specific Sunday afternoon feeling that he describes, one that I only ever experienced on lazy Sundays after a big lunch in Ireland.
